Morehead State University
North East Kentucky is home to Morehead State University. MSU is where local students go to realize their full potential, expand their mind, and prepare for a rewarding career. They have a reputation for being one of the best universities in the south and, as such, attracts students from other states as well. This is partially due to their world-renowned space science program - one of five in the entire country. Here, students get hands-on training in design, fabrication, launch, and monitoring of satellites and spacecraft. Their biomedical science program is also top-rate and ideal for anyone interested in a medical career. Another program of distinction is their engineering technology program where students are prepared for highly specialized technology careers. Students receive a well-rounded education in mathematics, physics, and technology - skills that are critical for the jobs of today and the future. These skills are highly transferable and beneficial for companies in advanced manufacturing, engineering, aerospace, and the automotive industries.
In addition to offering a variety of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, they also offer several unique educational opportunities that are centered around workplace readiness. These include:
The Craft Academy
Kentucky high school students can enter the Craft Academy where they can attend courses at the University. The academic rigor of the Craft Academy challenges students to excel at their highest level through project-based STEM+X courses and hands-on learning experiences, with emphasis on innovation, design and creativity, and civic and regional engagement. Craft Academy students have sent experiments to the International Space Station, created their own textile business, presented research at regional and national conferences, and volunteered more than 3,000 service hours in our community.
Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program
This allows students to begin working on cutting edge research projects as early as their freshman year.
The MSU Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program is specifically designed to provide talented undergraduate students with the opportunity to work as a junior colleague with a faculty scholar/mentor on a research project, where research is broadly defined as the scholarly and creative work associated with an academic discipline. Students may work up to 15 hours per week during the academic year with starting pay at $7.50/hour. The fellowship is renewable for up to 4 years with satisfactory progress. Since 2005-2006, 994 students have participated in the program, supported primarily with institutional funds and some external grant funding. Preliminary data indicate that over 90% of the UG Fellows have presented their work at local, state, regional, or national professional meetings.
